    Parent involvement and reading

Why is parent involvement so important?

For many families and in many cultures school is where you learn your reading, writing and math skills.  Parents being involved or talking frequently with teachers is not seen as an important part of the education process.  Parents and families can be intimidated by the work that their students are doing and feel like they can’t help them because of their own education. Even a parent who has never attended any schooling can still have a major impact on their child’s education.  Some studies have shown that schools have to spend three times as much money helping a student who is struggling with reading to improve the same amount as if their parent begins reading with them at home!

Parents are the best teachers for their students!

If you want to help your student with their reading skills:

    1. Make sure your child sees you reading for fun.

If your child sees that you enjoy reading it will encourage them to read. So, pick up a book, a magazine, a newspaper and read!

    2. Ask your child to read to you.

This is a great way to give your child some positive attention and help them with their academics at the same time.

    3.  Read to your child.

Listening to stories can improve your child’s literacy and show you child that you are interested in reading. It doesn’t matter if you are reading in English or in another home language your child will love reading more if you are involved in it.

*Many times as parents we want to tell our children what they should be doing. Telling your student to “Do your reading homework its important” is not going to work as well as showing your child that reading is important by you yourself reading!

    Actions speak louder than words!

“There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.”

    –Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
